Stuff and Nonsense with Matt Black

On Saturday 20th October we welcomed poet Matt Black to St Aidan's church for an event called Stuff and Nonsense, held as part of the annual Off the Shelf literary festival.  During the first half, Matt regaled us with details of his research about Sheffield Markets from when he wrote the poems for the market benches.  He also read some of his Nonsense Olympics, which are poems based on the works of Edward Lear.

In the second half he kindly took requests for our favourite poems, some read by him and some by the people who had chosen them.  He finished the event by reading some more of his poems.  The audience was able to participate by shouting out certain words in the poems, or sometimes by reading along out loud as a group.  It was a fun and invigorating event, much enjoyed by all who attended.

Matt also wrote a special limerick just for the event:

There was a young man from the Manor

fell in love with a girl called Joanna,

so deeply he found

his head was turned round -

till he adjusted it back with a spanner.

boom boom!!!

We'd like to send a big thank you to Matt for such a great event.
