Bible Book Club

During this time of isolation we want to invite people to join our Book Club. We're going to pick a book from the Bible and give a bit of background. You then have a week to read the book and post your thoughts and answer the questions. The first book we are going to read is Ruth:

The book of Ruth was written sometime between the 11th and 14th centuries, but the author is unknown. Ruth was the grandmother of King David. The story takes place at a time when the people of Israel were not being very attentive to God and pleasing themselves (which happens a lot in the Bible!) This is a story of ordinary life and the decisions people make in the face of tragedy and uncertainty about themselves and those they care for, but I think it's also a book of hope.

As you read the book here are a few questions to ponder:

  • Do you think this story is literally true? Does that matter?
  • What type of writing is this? - e.g. history, poetry, a letter
  • Who is your favourite character and why?
  • Who is your least favourite character and why?
  • Do you see yourself in any of the characters?
  • What does this book have to say to us in 2020?
  • What are your questions, comments, thoughts?

It's a relatively short book so you have till Thursday 9th April to read and respond and then we'll pick another book to look at - if you have any requests let us know. Any comments you can post on Facebook or email Karen or phone one of the staff.
